How To Role Play
Let's start with the basics.
All you have to do is take the role of a character and act like them. It's like writing a part of a small piece of a novel just for your character.
There are many ways to do this, but here, we use a "novel" style approach, though script-style is also acceptable. For novel-style, you write it in third person point of view and in complete sentences. Use quotations whenever you want to speak and clearly spell out what your character is doing, thinking, and feeling in the duration of your post.
As you can see, what Linda said was in quotations, what she thought was italicized, and when she did was clearly stated. In this case, this would be one person, and then another person would respond to this as their own character, in this case "Morgan."
You do not post for another character. That is God Modding, and irritates people to no end. After all, how would you feel if someone controlled your character?
And you have to continue off what the last person said, so make sure to read what they said. After all, in the example above, it wouldn't make sense for Morgan to reply talking about stabbing a vampire with a stake (unless, of course, she's that crazy a character).
Also, people usually color their text and put a picture of the character at the start of the post to make it easier to know who's speaking. Neither of these is required, though, so long as it's clear who is talking and doing the action.

Example:
Linda walked through the park, absentmindedly kicking an acorn as she walked. All she could think of was the test she'd taken today. I failed it completely, she thought with a small sigh. Linda stopped when she saw her best friend. "Hey, Morgan! How do you think you did?"
